  • Native Education in Nova Scotia
Background on the development of Native Education in Nova Scotia:
In 1997, the Mi'kmaq people of Nova Scotia obtained a constitutional amendment from the provincial and federal governments to give them authority over their own school system on the reserves. The Eskasoni School Board is responsible for fundraising and supporting the reserve schools and curriculum development in their native language. This language program began fifteen years ago as the Language Curriculum Development Department of the School Board and in 1997 became the Centre of Excellence for Mi'kmaq Language Curriculum Development. It has been developing books and curriculum one year at a time for their immersion program in the reserve schools. This year saw the addition of curriculum to the Grade 8 level. Since 1997 all curriculum and books published by the Centre are distributed free of charge to all reserve schools in Nova Scotia; others may purchase them. A tremendous amount of energy and talent has gone into this work and Mary Rose Julian, the Coordinator of the Centre and her staff, is to be commended for their work.
