Topic

NURTURING SELF-ESTEEM IN THE HOME

Purpose

To discuss and share practical ways parents can nurture positive self-esteem in their children.

To provide participants communication skills practice in empathic listening.

Materials Overheads #7, 8, 9, 10, 11; Handouts #4, 5, and 6; flip chart and markers; pens and paper for participants.

The facilitator says,

Most researchers generally agree that there are two aspects of self- esteem we need to help our children develop:

  • a belief in their worth as unique human beings
  • a belief that they are capable

1. Worthiness
2. Competency

I am worthwhile.
I am capable.

  A child's self-esteem will be positive to the extent that the child comes to value himself and to believe that he is capable.
