Topic

UNDERSTANDING SELF-ESTEEM AND HOW IT DEVELOPS
The theory of the development of self-concept described in this section is based on Adler and Towne, Looking Out Looking In (Fifth Edition), "The Self-Concept: Key to Communication", Ch. 2, pp. 29-39. CBS College Publishing, 1987.

Purpose

To help participants understand and define self- concept and self-esteem.

To identify specific ways in which self-concept is developed and shaped by social forces.

Materials Overheads #2, 3, 4, 5; Handout #2; pens for participants
Activity What is self-concept?
Duration 5 minutes

The facilitator says:

You can begin to understand self-concept by answering the question, "Who am I?"

  • Ask each participant to write a description of who s/he is, in point form. Inform them that this is for their personal viewing only.

  • Display Overhead #2; state a few examples to get them started.

  • Tell participants that they will have 5 minutes to complete the activity.
