BORROWING POLICIES

WHO CAN BORROW

Anyone in Canada can become a borrower with The Centre for Literacy by registering with the librarian.

COSTS

There is no charge for borrowing materials when visiting the library. Those wishing to have materials shipped to them will need to pay shipping costs.

LOAN PERIODS

In Montreal
Those living in the Montreal area may borrow up to ten (10) items for a period of four weeks.

At a distance
Those living outside of the Montreal area can borrow materials on a cost-shared basis. They may borrow up to ten (10) items, for an extended period of eight (8) weeks (from the date of sending).

TRAVELLING RESOURCE TRUNKS

A Travelling Resource Trunk is a mini-collection of materials from our collection (between 30 and 50 items). To borrow a Traveling Trunk, you must be affiliated with an organization and sign a form accepting responsibility for lost or damaged items. Trunks circulate for a period of ten (10) weeks, and may be renewed on a case-by-case basis, subject to demand.

In exceptional cases, individuals may be permitted to borrow a traveling resource trunk. Such individuals will need to make a cash deposit or provide a credit card number as guarantee for the materials’ return.

Borrowers are responsible for returning materials within this 10 week period, and for paying the costs of shipping.

RENEWALS

Books and other materials may be renewed for two extra weeks by contacting the librarian, if no one else has requested them in the meantime.

OVERDUE ITEMS

Borrowers who neither return nor renew items by the due date will be charged fines of 5 cents per item, per day. The maximum fine for any item is the equivalent of its replacement cost.

LOST AND DAMAGED ITEMS

In the case of items that are

  • not returned 6 months after the due date;
  • declared lost;
  • returned damaged;

the borrower will be billed for the full replacement cost of the items, plus a 15% charge.

SUSPENSION OF BORROWING PRIVILEGES

A borrower may have his/her borrowing privileges suspended for failure to return materials or pay fines, until the accounts are settled.
