Literacy Promotion
at The Montreal Children's Hospital

Lire/Imagine/ Read

report on the Lire/Imagine/Read program

Lire/Imagine/Read, a collaborative pilot project between the Hospital and The Centre, is happening in four primary pediatric clinics. Parents and children who visit these clinics receive a book in their mother tongue, plus:

  • A Literacy Promotion bookmark
  • Information about age-appropriate reading and libraries as resources, as well as information about adult literacy programs, if appropriate.
  • Volunteer readers will be available in waiting rooms

Information/training sessions for staff are offered to ensure routine and accurate promotion. The project is  implementing recommendations from a recent needs assessment. The Centre for Literacy will help to

  • Develop a self-teaching module for paediatric resident training
  • Update print resources on literacy, child development and community resources
  • Create a more comprehensive program evaluation and monitoring system
  • Plan, support, participate in the fifth annual Family Literacy Day to be held on February 2, 2011 at the MCH

Poster Display

The Lire/Imagine/Read project was selected for a poster display at the recent Canadian Association for Pediatric Health Centres (CAPHC) conference, and was chosen as one of 10 to be presented in a spoken session. The abstract (No. 85) is available at:http://www.caphc.org/documents_annual/2007/poster_abstracts.pdf.
