Literacy Promotion
at The Montreal Children's Hospital
Lire/Imagine/ Read
Lire/Imagine/Read, a collaborative pilot project between
the
Hospital and The Centre, is happening in four primary pediatric
clinics. Parents and children who visit these clinics receive a book in
their mother tongue, plus:
- A Literacy Promotion bookmark
- Information about age-appropriate reading and
libraries as
resources, as well as information about adult literacy programs, if
appropriate.
- Volunteer readers will be available in waiting rooms
Information/training sessions for staff are offered to
ensure
routine and accurate promotion. The project is being evaluated on an
ongoing basis.
Family Literacy Day
2009
The fourth annual Family Literacy Day
celebrations took place at the Montreal Children's Hospital on January
28, 2009.
Roch Carrier, OC, award-winning author and former National Librarian of
Canada, delivered a Pediatric
Medical Grand Rounds address to doctors, nurses and other employees
as well as entertaining patients and staff with readings from
his
acclaimed work Le
Chandail de Hockey/The Hockey Sweater.
CBC Radio-Noon's
second hour on that day was on the topic "What was your
favourite
book read to you as a child?", with Jan Lariviere, Roch Carrier, and
Linda Shohet as guests.
Poster Display
The Lire/Imagine/Read project was selected for
a poster
display at the recent Canadian Association for Pediatric Health Centres
(CAPHC) conference, and was chosen as one of 10 to be presented in a
spoken session. The abstract (No. 85) is available at:http://www.caphc.org/documents_annual/2007/poster_abstracts.pdf.
