Directory of Quebec groups linking museums and adult literacy

In 2002, a national symposium in Montreal asked how the learning from the Reading the Museum projects could be captured and sustained. From these consultations, The Centre and the Canadian Museums Association developed two new projects – in Montreal and in Vancouver – to test the potential of using community facilitators to link groups across these sectors and help create new partnerships.

In 2004-05, The Centre received funding for the Montreal project from the Ministry of Education of Quebec (now known as MELS). Having examined several European countries where the practice of independent community facilitation in adult education is well established, the Ministry was interested in exploring the idea in Quebec. This project generated a high level of engagement. Some museums, arts and adult literacy groups reported projects already in place, but most expressed openness to new possibilities.

A directory of Quebec museums that was created in 2005 has been updated and expanded in 2008-2009 with a grant from The Adult Learning Knowledge Centre, Canadian Council on Learning. While not exhaustive, it now includes many new entries describing institutions or groups who already work with or want to work with adult basic learners. As before, it also has links across Quebec for those who live beyond Montreal. We outline opportunities in almost every corner of the province, and many on the web. The list crosses language lines, as we hope will become the norm.
