Writers in the Community
The Centre and QWF celebrate
many facets of literacy

DO NOT MISS Writers in the Community, a series of spoken word and community writing events that The Centre is co-sponsoring with the Quebec Writers Federation (QWF) in September to celebrate International Literacy Month. The series will include two hip-hop and CD production workshops, created collaboratively with local community groups, and two outdoor events featuring performance poetry, street writing and puppetry.

The series, planned in partnership with three community partners – Leave Out ViolencE, Head & Hands, and Tyndale St-Georges Community Centre – is a pilot project for the Quebec Writers’ Federation to involve its members in grassroots activities. The Centre has been doing similar events for the past five years each April to coincide with the Blue Metropolis Literary Festival. The Centre and QWF want to maintain the momentum throughout the year to recognize multiple literacies and creativity at the community level.

Participating artists include Ian Ferrier, Manchilde, Norman Nawrocki, Paula Belina, Gabriel Levine and Padraic Scanlon – among the most exciting spoken word and performance artists in Montreal.

Follow-up activities include:

  • invitations to some young performers to participate in Words and Music, a year-round spoken word series sponsored by the Quebec Writers’ Federation;
  • invitations to others to record a CD in a professional studio setting.
  • scholarships to some who show special ability and interest in working on their writing skills. They will be invited to submit a sample of their work to the QWF; the writers of the best sample work will be offered free tuition (value: $150) to a QWF writing workshop;
  • donations of $500 worth of new books to each community partner organization from the annual Centre for Literacy book sale run in conjunction with Giant Book Sale at Côte des Neiges Plaza (September 4 -28) [See sidebar]
