Finding a Literacy Provider

The Centre for Literacy does not train volunteer tutors or provide tutoring to individuals wanting instruction. If you are looking for a tutor, or would like to become one, one of the following organizations will give you the information you need. You can also consult  the MELS 2008 publication LiteracyTraining in Québec.

Frontier College
Frontier College is a pan-Canadian literacy organization that runs a number of programs in Montreal, including reading circles (in French and English), homework clubs, and one-on-one and small group tutoring.  For more information or to volunteer with Frontier College in Montreal, please call 514-528-1001 or email montreal@collegefrontiere.ca

Literacy Volunteers of Quebec (LVQ)
LVQ is a network of English language community-based, volunteer literacy organizations active in regions throughout Quebec. These groups provide tutor training and support services to volunteers in their communities, and help match volunteers with individuals looking for literacy services. Montreal-area members of LVQ include:

Ligne InfoAlpha
Literacy Foundation/ Fondation pour l'alphabétisation

The Ligne InfoAlpha (1-800-361-9142) is a bilingual, province-wide telephone referral service, which connects individuals to appropriate literacy and basic education services in their region. This service is an initiative of the Government of Quebec, and is administered by the Fondation pour l’alphabétisation.

Quebec English Literacy Alliance (QELA)
The Quebec English Literacy Alliance, established in 1997, is an anglophone literacy network comprised of representatives from the Quebec Literacy Working Group (QLWG) and Literacy Volunteers of Quebec (LVQ)

Quebec Literacy Working Group (QLWG)
The QLWG is a coalition of adult literacy and basic education programs and services provided through Quebec’s English language school boards. Montreal-area members include:

The Saint Columba House After School Program in Point Saint Charles is looking for volunteers. Saint Colomba House is a community center in Point Saint Charles located at 2365 Grand Trunk (Charlevoix Metro). People of all ages and backgrounds welcome! Words for Women – YWCA Montreal
A free, personalized tutoring program for women who would like to read and write more easily, offered in both French and English to women 16 years or older on the island of Montreal with less than 9 years of schooling.

The program has two training sessions a year for volunteer tutors and accepts learners all year round.


LITERACY RESOURCE COLLECTIONS

The Centre for Literacy
The Centre is Quebec’s official depository and central lending library of English language resources touching on literacy and lifelong learning. The collection is open to everyone in the community, and there are no membership fees.

Centre de documentation en éducation des adultes et la condition féminine (CDEACF)
CDEACF is Quebec’s designated provider of French language literacy resources.
